Program Merit Award Santa Clara County Parks & Recreation (for the Trail Advisory Committee’s work on the Trails Master Plan)

Lifetime Achievement Vie and George Obern

Trail Merit Award #1 Heritage Trails Fund (for their Juan Bautista de Anza Historic Trail Commemorative Relay from Mexico to the S.F. Bay Area – over 1400 miles)

Trail Merit Award #2 Coastwalk (for their Whole Coast Hike along California’s Coastal Trail from Oregon to Mexico – over 1100 miles)

1998 Conference in San Diego - Awards are for 1997 accomplishments:

Lifetime Achievement Claude A. (Tony) and Mildred Look

Trail Project Merit Award Town of Mammoth Lakes (for their persistent and creative efforts to attract grant funding from a wide variety of sources in order to reach the half-way point in their ambitions and comprehensive trail system)

Trail Program Merit Award East Bay Regional Park District (for responding wisely to both the request and bequest of the late Mr. Ivan Dickson by creating a perpetual trail maintenance fund to instill a stewardship-based appreciation for trails among the citizens of the East Bay)

1999 Conference in Asilomar – Awards are for 1998 accomplishments:

Lifetime Achievement Ilse Byrnes

Trail Project Merit Awards Carlsbad Watershed Network (coalition of non-profit organizations training & using 120+ volunteers to implement Carlsbad’s trail plan. 1st 1.5 miles of trail just completed.)

Trail Program Merit Awards (2) Mokelumne Trailbusters (1200 volunteers contributed over 7000 hours in land stewardship projects since 1992)

Bay Trail & CCC’S Reg. Development Program (competitive grants over 2years for $960,000, leveraging $11,000,000 in matching funds, for 8 projects & 15 trail mi.)

Trail Leadership Award Donald Murphy (In recognition of 20+ years of sustained & outstanding leadership for trails and parks in California.)

Special Recognition National Park Service’s Rivers, Trails & Conservation Assistance Program (for its professional, unique, and vital work assisting local trail orgs. and agencies to define and meet their trail needs.)

2000 Conference in Redding – Awards are for 1999 accomplishments:

Trail Project Merit Awards (2) Cities of Clovis and Fresno, Tree Fresno, and the Coalition for Community Trails (For completing the 13 mile Fresno-Clovis Trail - "Sugar Pine Trail". Done in only 2½ years and involved thousands of volunteers.)

Cities of Glendale and Burbank, Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy (For completing the 36 mile Verdugo Mountains Trail System with the "Vital Link".)

Trail Program Merit Award Santa Cruz Mountains Trail Association (For their 30 year ongoing program of building and maintaining trails in the Santa Cruz Mountains, and for leading hikes.)

Trail Event Merit Award Bay Area Ridge Trail Council (for their successful "Hike for the Ridge" which involved many volunteers, raised $60,000+, and got a lot of media attention.)

Honorable Mentions (Project) (2) Red Bluff United (For forming a new grass roots organization and initiating the Red Bluff trails system.)

CCC’s Pacific Bay and San Luis Obispo Crews (For building a difficult new ½ mile section of the Soberanes Canyon Trail in Garrapata State Park on the Big Sur coast.)

Honorable Mentions (Event) (2) San Francisco Bay Trail Project (For their 10th anniversary celebration.)

County of Orange, and the Office of Orange County’s 5th District Supervisor (For their successful 5th District Trail Summit involving county officials, 12 cities, and 125 trail/bikeway advocates.)
