| Urban Design Conference 2001 San Diego |
URBAN DESIGN CONFERENCE TO ADDRESS TOP CONCERNS OF THE PUBLIC
Traffic congestion and crime are tied as the leading local concerns of Americans, according to a national poll conducted recently by the Pew Center. Addressing both of these concerns at once will be the topic of a national conference that builds on recent national discussion about "Livable Communities" and Smart Growth. The event will be held January 19-20 in San Diego. "Redefining Community: A Smart Growth Approach to Street and Neighborhood Design, Crime Prevention, and Public Health and Safety," cohosted by the Local Government Commission and Penn State University, will be held at the historic U.S. Grant Hotel in lively downtown San Diego. This national conference will gather a broad range of practitioners to examine how we can work together to redesign existing neighborhoods and improve the design of new neighborhoods to create safe and more walkable communities. Experts will present case studies, techniques and best practices that have provided alternatives to auto use and positively impacted public health and safety by increasing walking, decreasing violent crime and reducing pedestrian traffic accidents. Participants will represent a wide variety of professions including landscape architects, urban designers, government officials, planners, architects, public health professionals, law enforcement personnel, and crime prevention professionals. Speakers will approach community design from a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary perspective. Over 50 organizations and government agencies have signed on as cosponsors of the event. For additional information, please contact Michele Kelso, Program Manager for the Local Government Commission at (916) 448-1198 or Mark Bernhard, Senior Conference Planner, The Pennsylvania State University at (814) 863-5100.
